A Happy Christmas to you all
Christmas means so many different things to different people. If you’re in business with a seasonal trade it can be financial make or break time. If you’re a party person there’s a good chance of near oblivion for a week or so. For families it can be the fun of reunion or the horror of Auntie Maud’s company for several day’s bitching. Children can discover that Father Christmas is all that they hoped he would be or that he’s a mean old codger who doesn’t understand the importance of V2 Robosapien. Clergymen bang on about it not being religious enough - not that the first one had much of religion about it - more a heartless attempt to curb tax evasion by an emperor strapped for cash. Nonetheless we all wish each other a Happy Christmas and I guess the child in all of us hopes fervently that this time it really will be happy. The simple bit of the Christmas message is that you have a happy Christmas by making other people happy. Same goes for January 5th and July 22nd, too.

REMEMBER - Bingo in the Village Hall on the last Friday in every month !!

(Except December, so you’ll have to wait a month for your next fix!)

Everybody is very welcome so please put the date in your diaries. DT

Genealogy
Anne Gill tells me that Grimsby library have a complete set of microfiches of all the local church registers, so if you are chasing up ancestors it’s only a bus ride into Grimsby, not a train journey to Lincoln.

George Ostler
In the last issue we mentioned George William Ostler. We’ve had a number of comments - his sister is Mrs Olive Oxby who lives in Mulberry Close and other members of the family still live in the village. We are now more certain of the position of his grave and look forward to getting the appropriate headstone installed. Thanks to those who responded.

Boundel’s Stone
The Grim and Boundel legend tells of a time, before the Danes came to Lindsey, when a sea-faring man known as Little Grim, spied two magic stones whilst on his travels to Denmark. It was told, that if the stones were beaten with hazel rods, rain would fall, crops would become abundant and livestock would be fit and healthy. Grim and his compatriot Boundel, decided to transport the magic stones over the North Sea to King Lud back in Lindsey.

Under the cover of night, Grim and Boundel transported the stones to their ship and commenced their journey to England. The weight of the stones proved too much for their boat and for the safety of their megalithic cargo, the two mariners were obliged to discarded many of their possessions overboard. They eventually arrived at Tetney High Sands on the Lincolnshire coast and made their way down stream to Grainsby, before continuing their journey overland. After crossing the Old Fleet Drain, Boundel managed to transport his stone to the village of North Thoresby, before returning to assist Grim who was having difficulties with his megalithic freight. Between them, they managed to transport Grim’s stone to what was later to become the mediaeval village of Autby. Here the stone remained and became central to a local custom. The presence of the Grim Stone revived an ancient Danish, whipping ritual that was perpetuated in the village until it is told, “The devil came and took Grim’s stone away.” But Boundel’s stone is still there in the field behind St Helen’s Churchyard. So it must be true!

1940s Day 2008
The Parish Council has already planned the basis for next year’s 1940’s day which will take place on Saturday 5th July. Already we have booked many attractions and hope that this event will be as well supported by the village as it was this year. It was wonderful to see the community spirit back in North Thoresby! We have had offers of help for the next event, which is brilliant as the day takes a lot of organisation and it has been very difficult the past two years with only a handful of helpers. Anyone wishing to be involved, please contact a councillor or the clerk.
We are going to have a village cake stall next year and would be so pleased if each household could provide one cake or small cakes to sell on the day. Remember that ALL money raised goes to the village and we know there are some wonderful cooks amongst you!! For those of us who have problems boiling water, bought cakes would be just as gratefully received!! Reminders will be sent out nearer the event.
Still on the 1940’s theme, does anyone out there have an old baker boy bike or equivalent that we could borrow on the day. I know this is a long shot, but you never know what is hidden in outbuildings or sheds! We are also looking for any related items from that era, such as old tins, signs, gas masks etc. so that we can display these.

Cold Calling
Sadly there have been incidents in the village where people have been intimidated or even worse, burgled, by cold callers. The Parish Council has taken the matter up with Lindsey and we have requested that we become the first “No Cold Calling Zone” in the district. Research has shown in other Counties that this is highly successful and has reduced crime by up to 80%. Please do not answer your doors to anyone you are not expecting, no matter how plausible they may seem. If they are meant to be there, they will carry identification and will not be offended if you check. DT

Deliveries
Mr Peter Jackson has delivered a large number of newsletters in the past but now feels unable to continue. We are very grateful to him for his help. Many thanks to all who help in this way - we can always do with a few more. Contact Bob Emm on 840029 if you can help.

In the last issue we asked people whose hedges border the road or the pavement to make sure they were cut back so that they weren’t a hazard for pedestrians. Some of you have been very kind and responded. Some haven’t! Have a look at your hedge and try to see how easy it would be for a wheelchair to get by. If it would be difficult, give your hedge a haircut!

Street Lighting
There have been requests over the years from residents asking the parish council if North Thoresby could have more street lighting especially along High Street and Station Road. This has been assessed by the Street Lighting people at LCC and they are happy with the levels of lighting within the village. They did state however, that the trees obscure the lighting on Station Road and if the trunk of the tree is in a garden, then the owner of the tree is responsible for ensuring that their tree does not obscure the lighting. If the trunk of the tree is sited on the grass verge then Highways will undertake the pruning. Anyone wishing to report a lamp not working is asked to contact ELDC directly and report the number on the lamp column.

Floods
The parish council were made aware that some of the properties within the village suffered flood damage during the bad weather earlier this year. Whilst ELDC are employing people to put remedies in place to ensure that this does not happen again, the parish council have taken on 350 sandbags which will be stored at the village hall so that they are accessible to all should another emergency arise. Please note that they will only be distributed to people whose homes are at risk, not for garages or outbuildings. More details on this will follow at a later date
